Abstrait :

No less than seven major artworks from the fine art collection are on temporary display at La Boverie, Musée des Beaux-arts de Liège (BE), as part of the « Abstrait: » exhibition on view from May 31 to August 18, 2024.

Curators : Martine Droixhe, Françoise Safin and Marc Sterkendries

« Abstrait: » traces the history of Abstraction over more than a century of creation, from the creative effervescence of the avant-gardes in the early 1910s, to contemporary production. While the European pioneers broke with the traditional conception of painting at the beginning of the 20th century, artists have continued to experiment with new approaches to abstraction ever since.

The great diversity of non-figurative approaches demonstrates the multiplicity of influences, as well as the richness of different movements over time. This is demonstrated by the loans granted by the Foundation, such as Signe remue by Zao Wou-Ki, which explores the expressive capacities of gesture, sign and material in an unprecedented way, as well as Vegaviv II, a work also dating from the 1950s, but this time highly graphic in conception and, in this sense, a precursor in the search for illusionary effects.

This exhibition offers an immersion into the heart of abstract art, through the discovery of this infinitely expressive and seemingly elusive form of language.

The Fondation's works by the emblematic protagonists of European abstraction in the second half of the 20th century, such as Victor Vasarely, Aurélie Nemours, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Martin Barré, François Morellet and Piero Manzoni, enrich the important body of work on show.
