Long-term loan to the Musée d'art et d'histoire, Geneva

Long-term loan to the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art and of the Jean-Louis Pévost Foundation.

In June 2010, the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art and the Jean-Louis Prévost Foundation acquired the artwork Jeune femme à la fontaine by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, and loaned it to the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva for public and permanent exhibition.

Today universally famous for his landscapes, Camille Corot was also an immense painter of figures; Degas particularly appreciated him in this field, underlining his modernity. Portraits of intimate and strange nudes, Roman peasant women and monks absorbed in reading, children and workshop models, fashionable women and men in armour, Corot successfully approached all genres, from the very small effigies of his intimates to his monumental fantasy figures, of which the Woman with the Pearl of the Louvre is the most famous. Contemporary as well of Ingres to whom he pays homage as of Courbet or of the young Manet, with whom he confronts himself, Corot, during his long career, seeks, with his figures, to build a bridge between tradition and modernity. Rich with some sixty masterpieces from the most important public and private collections in Europe and the United States (Musée du Louvre, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève, Fondation Collection E.G. Bührle in Zurich, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection in Madrid,...), the exhibition organized by the Marmottan Monet Museum intends to highlight this original and brilliant aspect of the production of the first modern landscape gardener.

Corot: Women

Camille Corot is best known as the great master of landscape painting in the 19th century who bridged the French neoclassical tradition with the impressionist movement of the 1870s. His figure paintings constitute a much smaller, less well-known portion of his oeuvre, but arguably are of equal importance to the history of art, in particular for the founders of modernist painting such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Braque. Dressed in rustic Italian costume or stretched nude on a grassy plain, Corot’s women read, dream, and gaze, conveying a mysterious sense of inner life. His sophisticated use of color and his deft, delicate touch applied to the female form resulted in pictures of quiet majesty.
