Ménage à trois. Warhol, Basquiat, Clemente

The New York art scene of the 1980s is legendary. Vital, creative and more open to the media than ever, it offers young artists a playground full of possibilities. With their graffiti, they bring art into the street and everyday life into their art. Traditions are also challenged in the search for innovation. Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente are three of the main protagonists of this period.

While Andy Warhol, an important representative of Pop Art, executed the graphics and the series in a clear and innovative style, the work of the young Jean-Michel Basquiat with his furiously expressive gesture, a mixture of symbols, pictograms and letters from graffiti, seems to be a fiery anti-pole for Warhol. Francesco Clémentes' paintings, representing Transavanguardia, are dreamlike, mystical and almost surreal.
