Georges Mathieu, Vers l'abstraction lyrique

Two years after the death of this pioneering figure of Lyrical Abstraction, this retrospective pays tribute to the career of Georges-Victor Mathieu d'Escaudoeuvres (the artist’s full name)

Curator : Céline Ramio

This exhibition focuses on the birth of this vast movement considered to be one of the most important in contemporary art. Around the central figure of Georges Mathieu, born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, the exhibition features works by the main actors of Lyrical Abstraction including Wols, Bryen, Hartung, Riopelle, Soulages, Zao Wou-ki and examines the exhibitions from the period 1947 to 1951, which allowed the artist to lay the foundations of this new aesthetic, and spread its influence.
